Emerald Vale Brewery sits in the hills of the Jikeleza Route behind East London, and it is a good deal more interesting than a simple tasting stop. The brewery was one of the first craft producers in the Eastern Cape, and it works on a farm scale: you see the mash tun and the fermenters, hear how the water and the local barley shape the beer, and taste your way through the range, from the pale ale to the darker stouts.
The setting is half the point. The drive out passes through rolling green farmland and small Xhosa settlements, and the brewery itself looks over a valley that is a long way from anything resembling a cruise port. There is usually time to sit outside with a plate of food before heading back.
