Amakhala lies about ninety minutes from Port Elizabeth, on land that was farmland until a group of neighbouring owners took down the fences and restocked it. It is malaria-free, which matters if you are travelling with children, and at roughly nine thousand hectares it is big enough for the animals to behave naturally while still small enough that a single morning drive has a genuine chance at the Big Five.
Drives at Amakhala go out in open vehicles with a ranger and a tracker, who work the radio between them to follow lion and rhino movements. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, hippo and cheetah are all resident, and the birdlife along the Bushmans River is exceptional. Because the reserve is private, vehicles can leave the road to follow a sighting, which is not permitted in the national parks.
