The Mekong Delta is where the river finally breaks up into nine arms and reaches the sea, and it supports one of the most densely farmed landscapes in Asia. The day is spent mostly afloat: a motorboat out into the main channel, then a switch to a wooden sampan for the narrow palm-shaded canals, where the paddler takes you under water coconut fronds barely wider than the boat.

In between there are stops that show how the delta actually works – a bee farm where honey is served in tea, a workshop making coconut candy, an orchard where you taste whatever is in season, from rambutan to pomelo – usually with traditional southern folk music over lunch. It is unhurried, and pleasantly low-tech.
