Two ports, two halves of the island

Where your ship docks decides which Sri Lanka you see. Colombo, on the west coast, is the commercial capital and the gateway to the wet, green lowlands: mangrove rivers at Bentota, the elephant sanctuary at Pinnawela, Buddhist temples, and the fishing harbours and Dutch canals around Negombo. It is the busier, more urban side of the country.

Hambantota, in the far south, opens the dry zone instead. This is where Yala and Udawalawe national parks are, with wild elephants, water buffalo, crocodiles and one of the highest leopard densities anywhere; the coast nearby has blowholes, salt pans and the surfing beaches around Tangalle, and the road inland climbs quickly towards the tea country.

Sri Lanka rewards visitors who plan around distances rather than wish lists, and that is what we do: a realistic route for the hours you actually have, in a private air-conditioned vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide, collected at the terminal and returned in good time.
