Zeus Tour – Cave of the Father of the Gods
On the Zeus Tour we drive to where Greek mythology begins: the legendary Zeus Cave in the Ida mountains. The way there leads over mountain roads and off-road tracks, past high plateaus, shepherds’ huts and viewpoints from which you look out over half of Crete. Pick-up and return at the Heraklion cruise terminal are of course included.
The Cave Where Zeus Grew Up
Legend has it that Rhea gave birth to her son Zeus in a Cretan cave and hid him there from his father Kronos. Several caves on the island claim the title – the one in the Ida mountains is the most impressive. Even the drive there, high above the Nida plateau, is an experience. On site you learn what archaeologists have found in the cave and why the place was already a sanctuary in Minoan times. Sturdy shoes really do help here, although there is not much walking.
Griffon Vultures with a Three-Metre Wingspan
The Ida mountains are one of the last great refuges of the griffon vulture in Europe. With a wingspan of around 2.80 metres they circle above the slopes, riding the warm thermals. We know the spots where the chances are best and stop there. Along the way we also meet the island’s half-wild goats and, with a little luck, the kri-kri, the Cretan wild goat found nowhere else in the world.
Mitato – the Shepherd’s Hut Built of Stone
On the high plateaus stand the mitata: dome-shaped huts stacked entirely from flat stones without mortar. Shepherds have used them for centuries to spend the night and to make cheese. We take a close look at one of them – they are still built exactly as they were 500 years ago.
Off-Road Sections and Panoramic Views
Part of the route runs over gravel tracks, which is why we deliberately use off-road vehicles. This is not a rally experience but the most comfortable way to reach places no coach can get to. In between we stop again and again at photo spots looking out over the plateaus and down to the sea. To finish we call in at a taverna and let the day wind down over Cretan food and a glass of wine.
