Valldemossa and Palma – Mallorca for the First Time

This tour shows two very different sides of the island: the romantic mountain village of Valldemossa in the Serra de Tramuntana, and the capital, Palma. If you are visiting Mallorca for the first time and want a real impression in a short time, this is the right choice.

Valldemossa – Lanes, a Saint and Chopin

We begin in Valldemossa, one of the highest and most beautiful mountain villages on Mallorca. Walking through the cobbled lanes you hear about Santa Catalina Thomàs, the most famous “Valldemossina” and the island’s only saint – her birthplace stands in the middle of the village. Valldemossa became famous through the Charterhouse: the composer Frédéric Chopin and the writer George Sand spent the winter of 1838/39 here, a stay that went thoroughly wrong in literary terms and made the place world-famous.

Coca de Patata – the Local Speciality

Before we leave Valldemossa there is a tasting: the coca de patata, an airy potato pastry traditionally eaten with a cup of coffee or hot chocolate. It was invented in Valldemossa and tastes better here than anywhere else.

Palma – and the Island’s Most Photographed Olive Tree

Then we head to Palma. Walking through the historic centre you see the cathedral, the Almudaina Palace and the magnificent town hall. Above all, though, we deliberately leave the big sights behind for a while: Palma’s charm lies in the small lanes, the hidden squares – and in that gnarled olive tree, probably the most photographed plant on Mallorca.
