There are around sixteen hundred of them, formed over millions of years and undercut at the waterline by the sea, which is what gives them that top-heavy, mushroom-like shape.

The boat threads between the larger islands, passes floating fishing villages where families live on pontoons, and stops at one of the caves – usually Thien Cung or Sung Sot – where lit chambers run back into the rock. Lunch or refreshments are served on board, and there is deck space for photographs; the light is best in the late morning when the haze lifts.
