The Green Side of the Island

The north of Gran Canaria receives far more rain than the south, and it shows. Indeed, the hillsides here are terraced and planted, and water runs in channels that are centuries old. Banana plantations cover the lower slopes, while higher up the land turns to pine forest and open ridges. Moreover, the trade winds bring cloud that hangs on the peaks for much of the year. As a result, the vegetation could hardly be more different from the dunes of the south. Finally, the coastline itself is dramatic, with black lava cliffs and blowholes where the Atlantic forces its way through the rock.
