Bonaire is ringed by a marine park that has been protected since 1979, and the reef starts so close to shore that you can snorkel straight off the beach. That is what most visitors come for, and our luxury sailing and snorkelling trip makes the most of it: a catamaran along the leeward coast, two or three stops over healthy coral, and drinks and shade on deck between swims.
The island above the water is worth a look too. The Bonaire highlight tour heads south past the salt pans, where mountains of white salt sit beside pink evaporation ponds and flamingos feed in the shallows, then on to the tiny slave huts on the shoreline and the lighthouse at Willemstoren. Northwards it takes in Rincon, the oldest village in the Dutch Caribbean, and the cactus-covered hills behind it.
