Waterfall, beach or jeep track?
The Samaná peninsula is the green, mountainous corner of the Dominican Republic, and the three tours we run there suit very different days. The classic is El Limón: a ride or walk through cocoa and coconut plantations to a fifty-metre waterfall with a cool pool at the bottom that you can swim in. It involves some uneven ground and is the most adventurous of the three.
The jeep safari trades the waterfall for distance, bouncing along dirt tracks into the hills behind Samana with stops at a local farm, a village school and a viewpoint over the bay. The beach tour is the gentlest option, a straight run to soft sand and calm water with loungers, shade and lunch, and nothing on the schedule but swimming.
Between January and March, humpback whales gather in Samana Bay, and boat trips to see them can be added when the season and your ship’s timing allow.
