Grenada earned the name Spice Island honestly: nutmeg, mace, cinnamon and cocoa still grow on the slopes above St George’s, and you can smell them on the road up into the hills. The harbour itself is one of the prettiest in the Caribbean, a horseshoe of pastel warehouses around a drowned volcanic crater.
Our Grand Etang hike takes you into the interior, where the rainforest reserve surrounds a crater lake at over five hundred metres. The trails run through tree ferns, bamboo and mahogany, mona monkeys are often about, and the Seven Sisters waterfalls further along the ridge give you somewhere to swim. It is a genuine walk rather than a stroll, with roots and mud underfoot, and good shoes matter.
Around the hike there is time for a nutmeg processing station, the fort above St George’s or Grand Anse beach, depending on how long your ship is alongside.
