From the meeting point we travel together in a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle to the Maya ruins of Chacchoben, about an hour’s drive from the port. Along the way your friendly English-speaking guide brings the region to life, sharing stories of the ancient Maya and the lush landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula.

The Maya Ruins of Chacchoben

Hidden in dense tropical forest beside the village of the same name – where Maya descendants still live in relative seclusion – the ruins of Chacchoben invite you on a journey back to the golden age of the Maya. The site’s temples and pyramids date from the 2nd to the 9th century AD, when Chacchoben flourished as an important ceremonial centre.

During an in-depth guided tour you discover the local flora and fauna, learn about the Maya religion and the significance of the sun and moon gods, and admire the distinctive architecture of these ancient structures. Surrounded by birdsong and towering jungle trees, it is a wonderfully atmospheric place steeped in history.

Boat Trip on the Bacalar Lagoon

After visiting the archaeological site, we continue to the breathtaking Lagoon of Bacalar, around 30 minutes away. Known as the “Lagoon of Seven Colours” for its mesmerising shades of blue and turquoise, Bacalar is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in southern Mexico.

At the jetty our boat is waiting to take us on an approximately two-and-a-half-hour cruise across the lagoon. We glide past several cenotes and along the stunning shoreline, stopping for a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear water. After the boat tour a tasty snack awaits you.

Before we begin the return journey to Costa Maya, we visit the charming pirate town of Bacalar with its historic fortress overlooking the lagoon. From here you enjoy a fantastic panorama before we head back to your cruise ship.

This private Bakadi Dreams excursion runs at a comfortable pace, in a small group, with a guaranteed return to your cruise ship in good time.
