A Journey Through the Ever-Changing Volcanic Landscape

Piton de la Fournaise offers a fascinating landscape that is constantly being shaped and transformed by volcanic activity. This excursion takes you on an unforgettable journey through breathtaking scenery, from lush green highlands to surreal moon-like volcanic landscapes.

Our route begins through the town of Le Tampon and continues upwards towards the high plateaus of Plaine des Cafres.

Here, you will discover a peaceful landscape of wide green meadows, grazing cattle, and small extinct volcanic hills that blend harmoniously into the scenery.

As we climb higher, the views become more spectacular. Approximately 8 km after Bourg-Murat, we reach the viewpoint of Nez de Bœuf, offering a breathtaking panorama over the deeply carved valley of the Rivière des Remparts.

Continuing along the volcanic route, we discover the impressive Cratère Commerson, a dramatic canyon surrounded by steep rock walls. From the viewing platform, you can look down into this spectacular crater, which reaches approximately 230 metres deep and has a diameter of around 200 metres.

The Moon-Like Landscape of Plaine des Sables

The closer we get to the volcano, the more extraordinary the landscape becomes.

The Plaine des Sables appears almost like another planet, with its copper-coloured, rugged lava terrain stretching into the distance. The rough road, surrounded by small shrubs, leads us towards Pas de Bellecombe, the famous viewpoint overlooking the sleeping giant—Piton de la Fournaise.

Spectacular Natural Wonders on the Return Journey

After a relaxing lunch, we begin our return journey and stop at two more impressive natural attractions.

📍 Le Gouffre of L’Étang-Salé

A spectacular natural rock corridor made of black basalt, where the powerful waves of the Indian Ocean crash against the cliffs with incredible force, creating a dramatic coastal spectacle.

📍 Le Souffleur – The Water Fountain Phenomenon

Another highlight is Le Souffleur, a fascinating geological curiosity on the coast near Saint-Leu.

Here, powerful ocean waves meet a volcanic rock formation, forcing seawater through a natural opening and creating spectacular water fountains that can rise several metres into the air. The stronger the waves, the more impressive the display.
