Le Morne Brabant Hiking

Experience one of the most iconic hikes in Mauritius with Bakadi Dreams as you climb the magnificent Le Morne Brabant.

You will be picked up from the cruise port at 7:30 AM.

Rising majestically above the southwest coast of Mauritius like a natural lighthouse, Le Morne Brabant is one of the island’s most famous landmarks. At its foot lie some of Mauritius’ most beautiful beaches, with soft white coral sand and crystal-clear turquoise waters.

During the 19th century, many escaped slaves sought refuge on the mountain, using its steep cliffs and remote location as a place to hide.

On 1 February 1835, following the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, a police expedition was sent to the mountain to announce the news of emancipation. Tragically, many of the fugitives misunderstood the purpose of the expedition and, fearing they would be recaptured, threw themselves from the cliffs to their deaths.

In remembrance of this tragic event and the abolition of slavery, 1 February is commemorated each year in Mauritius as a public holiday.

In 2008, Le Morne Brabant was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising its outstanding cultural significance and its powerful connection to the history of slavery and the struggle for freedom.

Although the hike is moderately challenging, the effort is richly rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views over the southwest coast of Mauritius, its turquoise lagoon, and the surrounding mountains.

The guided hike lasts approximately 2.5 to 3 hours.
