Maputo, the port that ships call at

For cruise passengers, Mozambique means Maputo. The capital sits on a wide bay at the southern end of the country, an easy walking city of jacaranda-lined avenues, Art Deco facades and Portuguese colonial buildings, with a market at its centre that is worth the visit on its own. The Casa de Ferro, the cathedral, the railway station and the seafront Marginal can all be covered in a half-day tour, and there is usually time for a coffee and a look at the craft market.

Mozambique’s coastline runs for more than two and a half thousand kilometres, and the country’s reputation rests on it: the Bazaruto and Quirimbas archipelagos, coral reefs, and seafood that arrives at the table the day it was landed. Those places are far from the port, but the food and the Indian Ocean atmosphere reach Maputo easily enough, and a piri-piri prawn lunch is a fair introduction.
