Swakopmund is the oddest town in Namibia and the most enjoyable to walk through. It was founded as a German harbour in 1892, and the Wilhelmine architecture is still there: the Woermannhaus with its tower, the old station, the Hohenzollern building, and rows of gabled houses with palm trees in front of them. Behind the last street the Namib Desert starts, and in front of it is the cold Atlantic.

The tour takes in the jetty and lighthouse, the museum and the crystal gallery, the promenade and the old colonial quarter, with time for coffee and apple cake, which is as much a Swakopmund institution as the buildings.
