Seals, dunes and the tide

Pelican Point is a low sandy spit that closes off the Walvis Bay lagoon, and it carries one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies on the coast – tens of thousands of them around the old lighthouse, with jackals patrolling the beach behind and dolphins often working the surf. Getting there means a 4×4 drive along the shoreline, which is part of the appeal.

From Pelican Point the route continues south into the Sandwich Harbour dunes, where the Namib meets the Atlantic head on and dunes of a hundred metres and more drop straight into the water. The drive along the beach and over the dune faces is only possible at certain states of the tide, so the departure time is set by the sea rather than by us, and your guide will confirm it the day before.
