Beach, city or game reserve?

Durban is South Africa’s warmest big city and its busiest port, and the three tours we run there pull in different directions. The coast and beach tour follows the shoreline north through the sugar-cane country of the Dolphin Coast to Ballito, with time on the sand and a stop at a viewpoint over the Indian Ocean. It is the easy, unhurried choice.

The Durban city tour stays closer to home: the Golden Mile promenade, the Victoria Street market with its spice stalls, the Juma Masjid mosque, the Botanic Gardens and the Moses Mabhida stadium, with the Berea ridge for a view back over the harbour. It shows the Zulu, Indian and colonial layers of the city in a single morning.

For wildlife, Tala Game Reserve lies about an hour inland in the Valley of a Thousand Hills, with rhino, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and hippo on open grassland. It is a genuine game drive within reach of a normal port call.
