Addo National Park & Schotia Game Reserve
Two reserves, one day
Addo National Park is the third largest national park in South Africa and the surest place in the country to see elephants. The herds here number well over six hundred animals, and because the park was created around them in 1931 they are entirely used to vehicles; at the waterholes it is normal to sit for twenty minutes while fifty elephants drink a few metres away. Buffalo, zebra, warthog and kudu are common, and the park also holds black rhino and lion.
The afternoon moves to Schotia, a private reserve on the far side of the road. It is smaller, denser and driven in open safari vehicles with a ranger, which changes the experience completely: lion, giraffe, hippo and rhino at close range, usually finishing at dusk when the animals are most active, with a meal in the bush before the drive back.
