The Sundays River runs down from the Karoo to the Indian Ocean through a valley of citrus farms, and just before it reaches the sea it passes the largest coastal dune field in the southern hemisphere. The boat trip covers that last stretch: flat, calm water with reed beds on one side and pale sand mountains rising on the other, which is a strange and rather beautiful combination.
It is a birdwatcher’s stretch of water – fish eagles, kingfishers, herons and, in summer, flocks of terns at the river mouth – and the skipper knows where to slow down.
