From the Peak to the Coast
The green peak of Monte Verde rises to over 700 metres. Indeed, on a clear day the view reaches across the channel to Santo Antao. Moreover, the road then drops through a stark landscape of ochre and black rock. For that reason, the scenery feels almost lunar in places. In addition, sudden green valleys appear wherever a little water collects.
Quiet Bays and Villages
Along the coast you reach Baia das Gatas, known for its calm lagoon. Nearby, the village of Calhau sits between two old volcanoes. There, fishers still bring in their catch on brightly painted boats. Finally, the eastern road leads back to town past wide, empty beaches.
