Haugesund

Gateway to the Akrafjord

Haugesund is a calm coastal town with a long maritime history. From the port, the road leads inland along the Akrafjord, between steep cliffs and deep water. Above all, the Langfoss waterfall drops 612 metres almost straight into the fjord and counts among the finest in Norway.

Good to Know

The drive to the waterfall takes about an hour each way through changing scenery. Therefore, comfortable shoes and a rain jacket are worth packing. Finally, we plan the timing around your ship.

A Town of Kings and Herring

Haugesund grew wealthy on the herring trade in the 19th century, and the harbour still shapes the town. Indeed, the area carries a much older history: Norway was united as a kingdom near here, and the Haraldshaugen monument marks the burial site of Harald Fairhair. Above all, the coastline of islands and skerries makes the approach by sea memorable.

The Fjord Country

Inland from the town, the Akrafjord cuts deep between mountains that rise steeply from the water. Waterfalls drop from the heights after rain, and the road hugs the shore for much of the way. As a result, the drive itself is as scenic as the destination. Finally, small farms cling to the slopes where flat ground is scarce.
