Two ports, two very different days
Cruise ships reach the Dominican Republic at two places, and they are nothing alike. La Romana, on the flat south-east coast, is the departure point for the islands: Saona with its natural starfish pool and palm-backed sand, Catalina with its reef, and the road west to Santo Domingo, where the Colonial Zone is the oldest European-built city centre in the Americas.
Samaná, on the north-east peninsula, is green and hilly. The El Limón waterfall drops fifty metres into a plunge pool you can swim in, jeep tracks run up into the cocoa country behind the coast, and the beaches are quieter. From January to March the bay fills with humpback whales.
Whichever port you are in, the Dominican Republic rewards leaving the terminal: this is a country of merengue, cigars, cocoa and some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, and it is large enough that the interior still feels rural.
