Maya ruins and a freshwater lagoon
The port at Costa Maya was built for cruise ships and very little else, which is exactly what makes the surrounding coast so quiet. Drive twenty minutes inland and the shopping arcades give way to low jungle, small farming villages and the road to Chacchoben, a Maya site whose temple platforms are still half wrapped in forest. It is a shaded, unhurried place to walk, and far less crowded than the big ruins further north.
An hour further on lies Bacalar, the lagoon of seven colours, where a limestone bed turns the freshwater every shade from turquoise to deep indigo. Combining the two makes a full but comfortable day out of Costa Maya, with time to swim in the lagoon before the drive back to the ship.
