Cable car, mangroves or jet ski?
This is an archipelago of ninety-nine islands and a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the three main kinds of day out here barely overlap. The SkyCab up Gunung Mat Cinchang is the headline: a steep cable car to a ridge at seven hundred metres and the curved Sky Bridge slung between two peaks, with the Andaman Sea and the southern Thai islands laid out below. Cloud and queues both matter, so the time of day you go makes a real difference.
The mangrove trips go the other way, by boat into the Kilim river system: limestone cliffs riddled with caves, a bat cave you can walk into, floating fish farms, and brahminy kites and white-bellied sea eagles wheeling overhead. It is the calmer, more natural half of the island, and it works whatever the weather is doing up on the mountain.
For something more active, the jet ski trips run out to the smaller outlying islands with stops to swim and snorkel, and there are straightforward sightseeing tours that combine a few highlights with a beach and the Eagle Square in Kuah. The duty-free status means chocolate, coffee and souvenirs are noticeably cheaper here than on the mainland, which is worth knowing before you shop.
