Guadeloupe is shaped like a butterfly, and the two wings are entirely different places. Grande-Terre, the eastern wing, is flat limestone country with the beaches: Sainte-Anne, Le Gosier, the cliffs of the Pointe des Châteaux and the sugar-cane fields inland. Basse-Terre, to the west, is volcanic, wet and green, with La Soufrière rising to nearly fifteen hundred metres, the Carbet waterfalls in the rainforest and a coast road that twists past black-sand coves.
Ships dock at Pointe-à-Pitre, right between the two, which means you genuinely choose your day. Beach-lovers head east, walkers and photographers head west, and fans of the television series shot on the island can follow the Death in Paradise locations around Deshaies, where the police station, the beach bar and the harbour are all real places you can stand in.
