Rainforest, reef and a slower pace
Tobago is the quiet half of Trinidad and Tobago, and the difference is obvious within ten minutes of leaving the pier at Scarborough. The Main Ridge Forest Reserve, protected since 1776, is the oldest legally protected rainforest in the western hemisphere, and the road through it is a green tunnel of bamboo and tree ferns with hummingbirds and motmots along the way.
Offshore, Buccoo Reef and the shallow Nylon Pool are the other side of the island. The glass-bottom boat crosses the reef, stops over the coral for snorkelling, and anchors at the pool, a waist-deep patch of sand-bottomed water in the middle of the lagoon.
