Casablanca is the largest city and the economic heart of the country. Above all, its Hassan II Mosque carries one of the tallest minarets in the world at 210 metres. Agadir, in the south, was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake and is known today for its long beach promenade.

What to Expect in Morocco

The country lives from its contrasts. In the medinas of Fez, Marrakesh or Tanger, craftsmen, spice traders and tea houses crowd the narrow lanes. Just a few kilometres on, olive groves, argan forests and the foothills of the Atlas begin. Moreover, the mix of Berber, Arab, Andalusian and French roots shows in the architecture, the language and, above all, the cuisine.

Culture, Crafts and Cuisine

Moroccan food counts among the richest in North Africa. Indeed, tajine, couscous and pastilla blend sweet and spicy in a way you rarely find elsewhere. Alongside them comes mint tea, traditionally poured from a great height. For crafts, the tanneries, potteries and carpet workshops are well worth a look, where much is still made by hand in family businesses.

Good to Know for Your Day Ashore

Morocco is a Muslim country, so cover your shoulders and knees for mosque visits and old-town walks. Please photograph people only after asking first. Payment is in dirham, and small notes are handy in the souk. In the lanes, a little friendly haggling is part of the experience. Finally, bring sturdy shoes, sun protection and water.
